UMUAHIA, Abia StateĀ
The Abia State Government has announced the suspension of its planned enforcement of operational restrictions on tricycles (keke) and motorcycles (okada) between the hours of 7:00 pm and 6:00 am. The restrictions, initially set to commence on August 1, 2024, have been put on hold until further notice.
This decision comes in response to the current security situation and the national mood, influenced by the impending “Hunger” and “Hardship” protests scheduled to start on the same date. The state government emphasized that this postponement reflects its commitment to compassionate governance and responsive policy implementation.
Despite the delay in the enforcement of the restriction policy, the enumeration and registration of all commercial vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles in Abia State’s transport sector will proceed as planned. A new date for the commencement of the restriction policy will be announced in due course.
The Abia State Government urges all citizens and residents to remain cautious and observant during the upcoming protests. The government advises those participating in the protests to do so peacefully and non-violently, as violent and destructive actions will not be tolerated. The administration, led by Dr. Alex Otti, is dedicated to preserving the peace and progress achieved over the past fourteen months.
Signed,
Prince Okey Kanu
Honourable Commissioner for Information and Culture
