…. Cites Prior Commitments

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has declined an invitation from the Nigeria Police Force, citing prior engagements. The refusal was communicated through a letter from Ajaero’s legal team, Falana and Falana Chambers, addressed to the Inspector General of Police.

The letter reads: “We are Solicitors to the Nigeria Labour Congress and its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, on whose behalf we write this letter in respect of the above subject matter. We have the instructions of Comrade Joe Ajaero to inform you that he is unable to honour your invitation on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, in view of the fact that your invitation letter was received by him yesterday. He has an engagement that had been fixed before the receipt of the invitation letter.”

Ajaero’s legal team further indicated his willingness to comply with the police request at a later date: “Therefore, Comrade Ajaero is prepared for your interview on Wednesday, August 29, 2024.”

In addition to seeking an alternative date, Ajaero has requested further details on the allegations against him. “In accordance with the provisions of section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as altered, Comrade Ajaero requests for the details and nature of the allegations of Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion and Cybercrime levelled against him.”

The letter concluded with a request for a prompt response from the police, expressing respect for the law while seeking clarity on the accusations.

This development follows the police’s recent invitation of Ajaero in connection with serious allegations, a move that has prompted significant reactions within the labour community. The NLC has warned of potential industrial action if Ajaero is arrested, signaling the tension surrounding the situation.
