As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has called on citizens to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and recommit to building a just and inclusive society.
In a statement released to commemorate the day, Meranda described democracy as more than a system of government, calling it “the hope of the Iya Eleja at Ijora, the voice of the market woman in Mushin, the strength of the artisan in Ikeja, and the dreams of the youth in Epe.”
She emphasized the resilience and contribution of everyday Lagosians to the democratic process, acknowledging that governance must reflect their struggles and aspirations.
“As Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, I reaffirm our commitment to the ideals of freedom, equity, and good governance,” she stated. “We will continue to legislate with integrity, listen with empathy, and serve with unwavering dedication.”
Meranda also paid tribute to democracy heroes, both known and unsung, who sacrificed for the liberty Nigerians enjoy today. She called for continued vigilance and active participation in nurturing democracy.
“Let us renew our promise to protect this democracy, deepen its roots, and ensure it serves all, not just a few,” she concluded.
She wished all Nigerians a Happy Democracy Day, urging them to keep the flame of freedom burning strong.
