A traditional ruler in Osun State, HRM Oba Oyewale Olasunkanmi Isaac, the Alasa of Asi in Odo-Otin Local Government Area, has petitioned the Nigeria Police over alleged threats to his life and the unlawful use of state influence by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Olumide Egbedun.

In a petition dated July 29, 2025, filed by his legal representatives, K.E. Ngwoke & Co., and addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone XI, Osogbo, the monarch alleged that he has been under threat following a politically motivated arrest and detention of a young man from his community.

According to the petition, the unnamed young man was allegedly arrested on the instruction of the Speaker despite committing no crime. He was said to have been detained for weeks and later remanded on trumped-up charges, allegedly due to Egbedun’s influence.

The traditional ruler stated that his attention was drawn to the matter by concerned villagers and elders, prompting him to engage the Speaker in a conversation. However, instead of a peaceful resolution, the monarch claims he was mocked and insulted, even as the Speaker allegedly ordered the young man to mention the monarch’s name during interrogation.

Following the encounter, the monarch alleges that Egbedun made a phone call threatening to kill him should he return to his palace in Asi. The call, allegedly made around 2:31 p.m. on July 27, 2025, was said to have been placed from the number 09069001009.

“Our client has not been able to return to his palace in Asi due to the threats proceeding out of the mouth of this suspect, who should ordinarily be a lawkeeper,” the petition reads. “The suspect has specifically threatened to kill our client if he should return.”

The petition further warns that tensions are rising in the community, with the risk of escalation into violence. The legal team urged the police to intervene immediately to prevent a potential breakdown of law and order.

“Our client’s life… is in palpable danger, and there is no end in sight if this danger is not nipped in the bud by security agencies,” the petition stated. “Sir, crisis is looming in the air… and may escalate into a full-blown war anytime soon.”

The petition was signed by Chief K.E. Ngwoke (LL.B, B.L.) and Akoh Tumiwa Esq. (LL.B, B.L.), calling on law enforcement to investigate the threats and bring those involved to justice.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Speaker Egbedun nor his office had issued a formal response to the allegations.
