Obieze and his co-defendants, Sabastine Emeka Offor and Odinwamkpa Ejike, were arraigned before His Worship, Osondu Chukwuani, at Magistrate Court 1, Enugu North, on a seven-count charge involving violent abductions and killings between April and May 2025 in Umumba Ndiagu and surrounding communities.
The arrest of Obieze, who had reportedly been on the run, took place at the Badagry-Seme border while he allegedly attempted to flee the country. His capture was made possible through coordinated efforts between the Nigeria Police, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and other security agencies.
According to the charge sheet marked MEN/473c/2025, signed by Superintendent of Police Justice Attah Esq., the Head of the Legal Team of the Enugu State Police Command, the suspects are accused of conspiring to kidnap and murder several victims, including:
- Ukamaka, 13-year-old female
- Chimaobi Ezi, 15-year-old male
- Joy Miracle Udokamma, 31-year-old female
Two of the victims, Chimaobi Ezi and Joy Miracle Udokamma, were allegedly murdered by the suspects, while Ukamaka’s current status was not disclosed in court.
The charge also stated that the offences contravene various sections of the Criminal Code of Enugu State, including Sections 495(a), 315(2), 494, and 274(1), which relate to kidnapping, conspiracy, and murder.
All three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Due to the capital nature of the offences, Magistrate Osondu Chukwuani ruled that the case be referred to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice and possible reassignment to a higher court with proper jurisdiction.
The Magistrate subsequently adjourned the matter to August 20, 2025, and ordered the remand of the accused persons in prison custody.
