ABUJA, NIGERIA —
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Sources reveal that Ajaero was apprehended early this morning while preparing to board a flight to the United Kingdom for an official assignment. He was scheduled to attend a conference of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) taking place in the UK today.
Though the reasons for his arrest remain unclear, reports indicate that Ajaero has been handed over to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) for further questioning.
At the time of this report, no official statement has been issued by either the DSS or the NIA regarding the nature of the arrest or the charges, if any, against Ajaero. Further details are expected to emerge in the coming hours.
This arrest comes at a critical time, as the NLC has been involved in ongoing discussions and actions regarding national labour and economic policies.
