The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old armed robbery suspect, Anyanwu Izuchukwu Gabriel, following a coordinated operation by officers of the Independence Layout Division, the Anti-Cultism Squad, and members of the Neighbourhood Watch.

According to a statement released on June 9, 2025, by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect was apprehended on June 8 at approximately 8 p.m. and rescued from an irate mob that had already inflicted severe injuries on him. A locally fabricated Beretta pistol was recovered at the scene, while other members of the gang fled.

The suspect, who is currently receiving medical treatment, has confessed to being a member of the Black Axe Confraternity. Police investigations are underway to track down his fleeing accomplices.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, praised the swift and collaborative efforts of both police operatives and community members that led to the arrest. However, he issued a stern warning against mob actions and jungle justice, stressing that such acts disrupt lawful investigations and the administration of justice.

The Enugu State Police Command reiterated its commitment to tackling crime and called on residents to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies.
