The late president, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at about 4:30 p.m. in a London hospital after a prolonged undisclosed illness, is being conveyed aboard a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and several other top-ranking government officials are accompanying the body of the late leader.

In recognition of his service to the nation, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to mark the state burial. The final rites will take place in Daura, Buhari’s ancestral hometown in Nigeria’s North-West region.

President Muhammadu Buhari, widely respected for his upright demeanor and austere lifestyle, first led Nigeria as a military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985. Decades later, he returned to power through democratic elections in 2015, defeating incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan — a historic victory for the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

Buhari, alongside his running mate Yemi Osinbajo, was re-elected in 2019 and served two terms before handing over to President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Shettima on May 29, 2023.

Details of the burial ceremonies are expected to be announced shortly by the presidency.
