Uyo, Akwa Ibom State – A tweet by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Akwa Ibom State Command, Timfon John, has sparked a heated reaction on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), after she made a statement reaffirming that bail is free in Nigeria.

Using the official police handle, @OfficerTomzy, the PPRO posted:
“Bail is free!!! Where there is no giver, there is no receiver.”
The comment, which appears to caution citizens against offering bribes to police officers for bail, quickly gained traction online and triggered widespread backlash from Nigerian users. Many expressed frustration, alleging that the reality at police stations contradicts the official stance that bail is free.
Critics on X accused the police of double standards and challenged the PPRO to back her statement with practical evidence from police stations across the country.
While the police have repeatedly stated that bail is free as enshrined in Nigerian law, public complaints and anecdotal reports continue to suggest that extortion during bail processes remains widespread.
As of the time of this report, the tweet continues to generate intense debate and scrutiny, with some calling for accountability within the police force to match its public communications.
