In a last-minute effort to prevent a nationwide strike, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the leadership of the Nigeria Governors Forum have summoned the leadership of the Organized Labour to an emergency meeting tonight. Sources familiar with the situation informed our correspondent on Sunday afternoon.
“A meeting has been summoned by the Senate President and the Nigeria Governors Forum. The meeting will be held tonight,” a highly knowledgeable source revealed.
On Friday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) declared an indefinite nationwide strike set to begin on Monday, June 3, 2024, citing the Federal Government’s refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage above N60,000.
NLC President Joe Ajaero announced the strike following unsuccessful negotiations between the government and organized labour. Despite the government’s final offer of N60,000, which was an increase from an initial N57,000, the labour unions deemed the proposal inadequate.
During the negotiations, the labour unions revised their demand, reducing it by N3,000 from the initial N497,000 proposed last week to a new proposal of N494,000.
Despite this concession, the talks reached an impasse as the government stood firm on its offer of N60,000, prompting the declaration of an indefinite nationwide strike.
The NLC on Friday May 31st 2024 declared a nationwide strike over the inabilities of the federal to come up with a new national minimum wage.
The organized Labour have gone ahead to mobilize its members for a nationwide wide strike as affiliate unions have informed their members to mobilize for the nationwide strike.
In Abia the NLC through its state Secretary have ordered that all Government ministries and establishments remain locked till further notice, the action also includes Private institutions in the state including private and state owned media houses.
