ABUJA, NIGERIA —

Following the arrest of its President, Joe Ajaero, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) convened an emergency meeting today, issuing a series of demands and resolutions in response to the situation.

In a statement released after the meeting, the NLC demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Joe Ajaero  before midnight today, condemning his arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The Congress also called for the immediate reversal of the recent hike in petrol prices to N617 per litre, stating that the price increase has further exacerbated the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

In preparation for potential actions, the NLC has placed all of its affiliates, State Councils, civil society allies, and the general Nigerian populace on red alert for further instructions.

An emergency meeting of the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC)  has been summoned for 9:00 AM tomorrow, September 10, 2024, to determine the next course of action.

The arrest of Ajaero and the sharp rise in fuel prices have heightened tensions, with the NLC warning of potential nationwide actions if their demands are not met promptly.
