Port Harcourt, Nigeria – A heart-wrenching case of domestic violence has thrown Rivers State into mourning and sparked widespread outrage after a young man, Sunny Amadi, reportedly died from severe burns allegedly inflicted by his Uniport girlfriend.
The suspect, identified as Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), is alleged to have set Sunny ablaze during a domestic altercation at his residence on Ogboro Street, Choba, near the university campus.

Sunny Amadi, 29, a native of Elibrada in Emohua Local Government Area (LGA), was said to have suffered third-degree burns covering a significant portion of his body. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident.
Cynthia, who hails from Odohua, also in Emohua LGA, reportedly fled the scene immediately, and her whereabouts remain unknown as of press time. Security operatives are said to be intensifying efforts to apprehend her.
While police authorities in Rivers State are yet to issue an official statement, the incident has sparked a wave of condemnation and renewed calls for stronger action against domestic and gender-based violence, including support for male victims.
Public reactions on social media have been swift and emotional, with many expressing shock over the gruesome nature of the act and demanding justice for Sunny Amadi.
